Chotoder Mahalaya 2019: Mahalaya is also known as Pitru Paksha or Pitri Paksha is the 16-day festival of the Lunarday period in the Hindu calendar. This is a time when Hindus pay homage and respect to their elder ancestors. The period is also known as Pitru Pakshya, Pitri Pokkho, Sola Shraddha ("sixteen shraddhas"), Kanagat, Jitiya, Mahalaya Paksha and Apara paksha. Hindus believe that Pitru Paksha is unfavorable, given the rite of death performed during the ceremony, known as Shraddha or tarpan. In southern and western India, it falls in the second Hindu lunar month of Bhadrapada (September) and follows the fortnight immediately after the Ganesh festival. It starts at the Padyami (first day of the night) that ends with the new moon day known as Sarvapitri amavasya, Pitru Amavasya, Peddala Amavasya, Mahalaya amavasya or simply Mahalaya. Most years, the autumn equinox falls within this period, that is, the Sun passes from the northern hemisphere to the south during this period. In northern India and Nepal, and in cultures that follow the purnimanta calendar or the solar calendar, this period may correspond to the dwindling fortnight of the lunar-solar month Ashvin, instead of Bhadrapada

According to Hinduism, the souls of the previous three generations of one's ancestor reside in Pitru-loka, a kingdom between heaven and earth. This kingdom is ruled by Yama, the god of death, who takes the soul of a dying man from the earth to Pitru-loka. When a person of the next generation dies, the first generation moves to heaven and unites with God, so Shraddha's offerings are not given. Therefore, only the three generations in Pitru-loka receive Shraddha rites, in which Yama plays an important role. According to the sacred Hindu epics, at the beginning of Pitru Paksha, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Libra (Tula). Coinciding with this moment, it is believed that the spirits leave Pitru-loka and reside in the homes of their descendants for a month until the sun enters the next zodiac, Scorpio (Vrichchhika), and there is a full moon. Hindus are expected to propitiate ancestors in the first half, during the dark fortnight. Source-Wikipedia
